A cover-up tattoo is a great solution in itself, because your old tattoo is simply covered over with a new motif. The technical term for this is covert. However, a significant point here is that the new tattoo motif is almost always larger and possibly also darker than the old one underneath. Otherwise, the old tattoo motif would always shine through. For this reason, a cover-up project is not always the best solution.
Having a tattoo faded in advance of a cover-up preparation using a laser is therefore an advantage.

Tattoos that have been engraved in a professional tattoo studio usually require between 6 and 12 treatments due to the higher pigment density. In comparison, less dense tattoos can in many cases be lightened as desired or completely removed after just 2 to 6 sessions.
The cost of tattoo lightening naturally depends on the size and complexity of your tattoo and will be determined by your laser therapist during your consultation. Finally, the duration of the session varies from person to person.

We are convinced that we only use the most modern and professional laser systems, such as modern 3-wavelength Quanta lasers, which were developed for the removal of multi-coloured tattoos. This means that high-quality and satisfactory tattoo lightening can be virtually guaranteed. At LASTER ÄSTHETIK, we do not use the conventional, far less powerful Picosure laser used by other organisations, including dermatologists.
Conventional lasers
The most common lasers work with only 2 wavelengths: 1064 nm and 532 nm. They can only be used to remove dark and red colour pigmentation or tattoos.
The technology we use
Thanks to an additional wavelength of 694 nm, our laser is able to successfully remove the entire colour spectrum (blue, light blue, turquoise, green) and other pigments.
When the tattoo is pierced, colour pigments are transported into the middle layer of the skin.
These colour pigments are so large that they cannot be broken down by the body itself. As a result, they remain permanently anchored in the skin, making the tattoo visible to the outside world.
When the tattoo is lightened, these colours are heated with a professional laser and virtually ‘smashed’. This causes them to break down into many smaller colour particles.
It is precisely these colour particles that act on the human immune system like a foreign body, which the body then excretes from the body via the lymphatic system.
Even dark-skinned people can have a tattoo removed. However, there is a risk of pigmentation. Talk to us, we will gladly answer your individual situation!
Medicines that increase the sensitivity to light and are not taken regularly should be avoided before treatment. The affected area must be kept dry and absolutely clean for two days after the treatment in order to avoid infection. The permanent make-up should not be exposed to natural or artificial sunlight during the entire treatment period. New Cover-up Tattoo shall be done not earlier as 4-5 months after the last laser treatment.
As with any aesthetic treatment, there is also a risk of tattoo removal. However, getting a tattoo away is the safest and most haunting removal method. The treated skin is reddened and may swell. In rare cases, bleeding may occur. If a crust forms, it should not be removed, as there is a risk of scarring. It is important to follow the care instructions of our laser therapists.
During tattoo removal, tattoo lightening, the ink of the tattoo is targeted and destroyed with the laser light. These shattered color pigments dissolve a cleansing process in the body so that the color pigments are then transported away via the lymph system.
Of course, this always varies. The treatment time ultimately depends on the size of your tattoo and the post-cooling time. For small tattoos, the treatment time is only a few minutes. Larger tattoos naturally require a little more time. However, we usually need around 3-5 sessions to achieve the desired lightening effect.

you need several sessions to remove a tattoo completely. The exact number of treatments is individual. Experience from 6 to 12 treatments is necessary up to the complete removal of a tattoos. The earlier a tattoo is, the better it can usually be removed. Exception is here an old tattoo, which was rather unproffesionel (badly) stabbed and already very pale, so a tatoo is usually also very quickly remove.
For a successful cover-up it is enough to lighten the old pigments so far that the tattoo artist can rework them cleanly. Dark tones such as black, blue, brown and red lighten fastest; violet and light blue need more patience and can change shade in between.
For lightening we use the same laser technology as for complete removal – just with fewer sessions: the light shatters the pigments, the body transports the particles away via the lymphatic system, and the motif fades in a controlled way to the desired degree.
Whether your tattoo is suitable for lightening is clarified in advance with a medical questionnaire. Laser treatment is excluded during pregnancy, breastfeeding, haemophilia, viral hepatitis, cardiovascular disease or epilepsy; exceptions only after medical consultation.
Avoid photosensitising medication before the appointment (after consulting your doctor) and keep the area dry and clean for two days afterwards. Until your cover-up appointment: consistent sun protection for the lightened area.
Lightening feels similar to getting the tattoo – quite bearable and over quickly. On request we numb the skin beforehand with an anaesthetic cream.
With proper aftercare the lightened area heals without scars – an ideal basis for the new motif. Only on strongly tanned skin can temporary light pigment spots appear.
Redness, swelling and crusting are part of the normal healing reaction and subside after 6–10 days. There are 4–6 weeks between lightening sessions; daily moisturiser plus SPF 50 speed up the result.
Lightening needs considerably fewer sessions than complete removal – and is correspondingly cheaper. We will give you the exact price after looking at your motif in a free consultation.
For lightening too: laser treatment is the most skin-friendly method. Redness and swelling disappear on their own; please do not remove any crust so that the skin stays flawless for the new tattoo.
Do not scratch, let scabs heal in peace, and avoid sun, solarium and peelings during the lightening phase – this keeps the skin in top shape for your appointment at the tattoo studio.

Lightening a tattoo with the laser feels like short rubber-band snaps against the skin – for most clients it is easy to tolerate, especially as fewer sessions are needed than for a complete removal. Skin cooling reduces the sensation considerably, and a numbing cream can be used on sensitive spots on request.
Yes – darker skin types can also have their tattoo lightened. Because of the increased risk of pigment shifts we match laser type and energy particularly carefully to your skin tone.
Amateur tattoos usually sit closer to the surface and therefore often lighten faster; professional motifs lie deeper and more evenly in the skin. Both can be prepared well for a cover-up – only the schedule differs slightly.
Lightening for a cover-up is an aesthetic elective service – statutory health insurers do not cover the costs. Privately insured patients should clarify possible partial reimbursement with their insurer in advance.
