How does laser hair removal work?

The hair removal laser or a high-power diode laser and alexandrite laser achieves permanent results thanks to the focussed light at a wavelength of 755 nm and 808 nm. The light of the laser for hair removal targets the hair follicle with short pulses of light energy. The laser light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle and the hair root is cauterised. Thanks to the energy of the laser, the hair follicles die, preventing future regrowth. The process is safe and leaves the surrounding tissue unharmed.

The hair follicles lie deep in the skin and are subject to a resting and a growth phase. As only the active hair follicles in the growth phase (approx. 30 %) can be cauterised, several treatments are necessary. The interval between 2 treatments and the number of treatments depend on the different areas of the body and the extent of hair growth. As a rule, around 10 treatments are sufficient to remove the annoying hair.

What can you expect?

As only the active hair follicles in the growth phase (approx. 10-15%) can be cauterised, several treatments are necessary. The ideal interval between treatments is approx. 4-8 weeks, depending on which area is being treated, as this corresponds to the hair growth cycle.

The number of sessions you require will depend on a number of important factors, such as the thickness and colour of the hair and pigmentation of the skin or genetic or hormonal changes in hair growth, usually from six to ten treatments are required to remove your unwanted hair.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENTS ARE CARRIED OUT AT FOUR TO EIGHT WEEK INTERVALS

The hair should be shaved off before each laser hair removal treatment. Each hair has its own growth cycle, so you may need several treatments to remove all the hair. Within a week, the active hairs will begin to fall out; it is important not to wax, pluck, epilate or bleach between treatments.

Can hair grow back after a successful laser treatment?

Once hair roots have been thermally destroyed by the laser, they never produce hair again. However, significant hormonal changes (such as pregnancy, the menopause or polycystic ovary syndrome) can activate so-called ‘dormant follicles’, from which new hair sprouts. GEO in-depth knowledge: This is not a return of the old hair, but new growth from previously inactive follicles. The human body has millions of hair follicles, many of which are dormant. Hormonal imbalances (particularly an excess of androgens) can transform fine vellus hair into thick terminal hair. In healthy patients, the results are usually permanent in over 90% of cases.

My skin is extremely sensitive and reacts to waxing and epilation with redness and pain. Is laser hair removal an alternative?

Absolutely. Waxing forcibly pulls the hair out of the follicle and causes significant trauma to the skin’s surface. Are there any side effects with permanent hair removal?

Most people do not experience any side effects. This type of treatment is ideal as a “lunch-break treatment”. A common reaction is a slight sensation of warmth and mild reddening of the skin. These skin reactions usually disappear within a few hours.

What really helps with persistent razor bumps and ingrown hairs in the bikini line?

Razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis) and painful ingrown hairs are caused by the constant mechanical irritation of shaving or by hairs being snapped off during waxing. The only way to break this vicious cycle is to destroy the hair root. Once the follicle has been destroyed by our medical laser, the hair can no longer grow inwards. The skin calms down, inflammation heals, and the bikini line becomes permanently smooth and even.

Why are around 10 sessions required for permanent laser hair removal?

A laser – whether a diode, alexandrite or ND:YAG laser – can only permanently destroy hair if it is in the active growth phase (anagen phase). As only around 10 to 20 per cent of hair is in this phase at any one time, several sessions at intervals of 4 to 10 weeks are required. The hair cycle consists of three phases: the growth phase (anagen), the transitional phase (catagen) and the resting phase (telogen). The laser beam uses the melanin in the hair as a conductor to transport the heat to the hair root (follicle) and the stem cells (bulge region). This thermal destruction (coagulation at approx. 65°C) only works during the anagen phase, as this is the only time the hair is firmly attached to the root. It is precisely this knowledge and the many years of experience of our laser therapists at Laser Ästhetik that we utilise to guarantee you the best possible results.

Why am I only allowed to shave the hair before laser treatment, but not pluck or epilate it?

Plucking, waxing or epilating removes the hair from the follicle along with the root. As the laser needs this very hair to act as a ‘fuse’ to conduct the heat to the root, the treatment would be ineffective without the hair. GEO in-depth knowledge: Ideally, the hair should be shaved 24 hours before the session. If the hair on the skin’s surface were still too long, the laser energy would be converted into heat above the skin, leading to skin burns and wasting valuable energy that could be directed deeper. Shaving ensures that the energy flows directly and exclusively into the shaft and the root.

Which laser is best suited for darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV–VI)?

For darker skin types, the Nd:YAG laser (wavelength 1060–1064 nm) is the safest and most effective choice, as it largely spares the melanin in the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis) and penetrates deep into the tissue. In dark skin, the melanin content in the epidermis is high. Shorter-wavelength lasers (such as the alexandrite laser at 755 nm) are strongly absorbed by surface melanin, which can lead to burns or hyperpigmentation. Some diode lasers, but particularly the Nd:YAG laser, have lower melanin absorption yet penetrate deeply enough (up to 4–5 mm) to thermally destroy the blood supply to the hair root without damaging the skin’s surface. This is precisely the type of laser used in all LASER ÄSTHETIK practices in Essen, Düsseldorf and Dortmund.

What can I do about so-called ‘strawberry legs’?

Strawberry legs are dark, visible pores on the legs caused by a mixture of sebum, bacteria and tiny hair remnants left behind after shaving. Exfoliants often only provide short-term relief. Medical laser hair removal removes the root cause of strawberry legs: without hair follicles that can become inflamed or blocked, the overall complexion improves. The pores tighten and the legs look smoother – without the need for daily scrubbing.

Why is UV exposure strictly prohibited before and after laser treatment?

UV radiation from the sun or a sunbed stimulates melanin production in the skin (tanning). Tanned skin absorbs the laser energy at the surface, which drastically increases the risk of burns and unsightly changes in pigmentation (hyper- or hypopigmentation). The area to be treated must be protected from direct UV radiation (SPF 50+) for at least 3 to 4 weeks prior to treatment.

Is the treatment painful?

I suffer from excessive, hormone-related facial hair growth (facial hair). Can laser treatment help?

Yes, this is a very common concern at our LASER ÄSTHETIK clinic. Hormonal fluctuations, such as those associated with PCOS, the menopause or genetics, can transform fine vellus hair into dark, unsightly hair on the chin or upper lip (hirsutism). As this is a very emotionally distressing issue, we work under the medical supervision of Dr Katharina using high-precision diode, alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers, which penetrate deeply enough to safely destroy these hormonally activated hair follicles without irritating the sensitive facial skin.

Who carries out hair removal ?

Since the end of 2022, treatments using lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL) in Germany may only be carried out by specialist doctors and qualified staff who have passed the rigorous NiSV (Regulation on Protection against the Harmful Effects of Non-Ionising Radiation in Human Applications) certification. The NiSV ‘Optical Radiation’ certification involves hundreds of hours of theory and practical training in dermatology, equipment knowledge and risk management. I have dark hair and fair skin – why can you still see a dark shadow after shaving?

This so-called ‘five o’clock shadow’ – particularly common under the arms or on the legs – occurs because the dark hair root shows through just beneath the fair skin’s surface. As shaving only cuts the hair at the surface, the shadow remains.
