Is tattoo removal painful?
Laser tattoo removal is associated with some discomfort, but there are ways to make the process less painful. Tattoo laser removal is a relatively quick procedure and there are several different options to reduce the pain. We hope this post informs you enough so that you know some of the options available before laser treatment has begun. At LASER AESTHETICS in our Essen, Düsseldorf and Dortmund practice, we discuss in detail the laser treatment procedure for tattoo removal and create an individualized plan for pain control.
Tattoo removal by laser involves the use of a focused light – laser energy that blasts the ink capsules deposited in the skin, allowing them to be gradually removed by the body’s lymphatic system. Many people compare the sensation of each laser pulse to a rubber band being shot onto the skin. This pain sensation varies for each person and depends on the density and depth of the sting, the color of the ink, and also the location of the area to be treated on the body.

An anesthetic numbing creme can be applied to the skin to numb the nerves involved in the transmission of pain. This ointment must be applied about 40 minutes before the procedure, so the treatment will be well tolerable.
Cooling the treated area, both before, during and after the treatment is also very helpful – it is cheap, safe and very effective. The cold numbs the skin and after the treatment reduces swelling and possible inflammatory reactions that can occur with laser tattoo removal. We recommend to continue cooling at home after the treatment. Most clients find this very comfortable.
Finally, taking acetaminophen (paracetamol, Tylenol) as it is intended both before and after the tattoo removal treatment is also a possible option to reduce the pain. It is imperative not to use other anti-inflammatory medications or aspirin, as both can increase the risk of bleeding.
