Why mineral sunscreen is the better – and healthier – choice – Recommended by LASER ÄSTHETIK

Everyone knows that sunscreen is a must-have in skin care. It protects against premature skin ageing, prevents sunburn and reduces the risk of skin cancer. It sounds simple: apply sunscreen and you're done. But anyone who has ever stood in front of a shelf of sunscreens, overwhelmed by the selection, or read endless online reviews, only to buy a cream that leaves a white film, stings the eyes or turns the skin into an oil pan, knows that not all sun protection is the same. And especially after laser treatment in our LASER AESTHETIK practice, the right sun protection is crucial.

Promise versus reality: what sunscreen really does

The advertising promises miracles: ultra-light, absorbs instantly, no white film, perfect make-up base, moisturising without being greasy. Sounds fantastic, doesn't it? The reality is often different. Some creams are sticky, others leave a ghostly look, and some even irritate the skin. At our LASER AESTHETIK practices in Essen, Dortmund and Düsseldorf, we daily see the consequences of choosing the wrong product.

We wanted to find out more and took a look at the latest sunscreens – with a particular focus on the ingredients. Because it's not just about the sun protection factor (SPF), but also about what we actually put on our skin. And this is where it gets controversial.

Chemical sun filters: temptingly light, but with downsides?

Conventional sunscreens often rely on chemical filters. These filters penetrate the skin and convert UV radiation into heat. They are popular because they are often lighter and do not leave a white film. But science shows that there are worrying findings about their safety.

Systemic absorption and hormonal effects: studies sound the alarm

Studies by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) have shown that many chemical UV filters – including oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, octocrylene, homosalate and octisalate – are absorbed systemically by the body and are detectable in the blood in concentrations that exceed the safety thresholds set by the FDA [Study 1, Study 3].

Oxybenzone is a particular focus of attention. It is considered an endocrine disruptor, i.e. a substance that can interfere with hormone balance [Study 2]. Animal studies indicate anti-oestrogenic effects and possible effects on male fertility [Study 2]. Octinoxate is also discussed as a potential endocrine disruptor [Study 2].

Other concerning aspects of chemical filters

  • Skin irritation and allergies: Chemical filters such as oxybenzone, benzophenones, cinnamates and dibenzoylmethane can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation [Study 2, Study 4]. They are often problematic, especially for sensitive skin or after laser treatment in Essen.

  • Environmental impact: Oxybenzone and octinoxate are suspected of damaging coral reefs and have already been banned in some regions [Study 2].

But what about the risk of skin cancer? Don't the benefits outweigh the risks?

There is no doubt that sun protection is important for preventing skin cancer. But the question is: Do we have to risk our health to achieve this? Studies suggest that the long-term effects of systemic absorption of chemical filters are not yet fully understood. The FDA itself is calling for further research [Study 1]. Mineral sun filters: natural and safe protection

The alternative is mineral sun filters such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These substances are of natural origin and work by forming a protective shield on the skin and reflecting UV radiation. They do not penetrate the skin and are considered safer and more skin-friendly – even for sensitive skin, children and pregnant women, and, particularly important, after laser treatment.

Thanks to nanotechnology (although there is still some debate about this, the particle size is crucial and many manufacturers are opting for ‘non-nano’) and innovative textures, there are now mineral sunscreens that are hardly any different from chemical creams – without the white film and with a pleasant feel on the skin.
